Just put the screen with the candles to the side. There is no damper door so you need to first make sure that the draft air is getting up. To do so, light up any small wood chip and hold it inside the fireplace near the flue opening. 

 

What you are trying to do is to heat the upper part of the fireplace.

 

 

Once you see the draft is going up, the fireplace is ready.
